Lost BlackBerry messages

Blackberry Add comments

bbsadI am a true BlackBerry lover but yesterday my BlackBerry curve did something very bad. Suddenly after a short call I noticed that the call log was missing in the phone application. First I thought I accidentally changed a setting but then I realized that it was completely gone.

After some checks I found out that not only that call log was gone but all my messages from two days ago backwards which means only the messages of yesterday and today were on the device. The address book and calendar entries were still there.

I did some research and found out that this happened to other BlackBerry users too - see here, here and here. It seems like this happens if there is not enough space left on the device. I deleted some unused stuff and I hope this will not happen again - from now I will check the free device memory more often under Options -> Status.

I had the same problem with my Curve:

With the release of the Curve, I finally made the jump from Palm and Windows Mobile to Blackberry to take advantage of its messaging capabilities. I have a brand new AT&T branded Curve (8300) with the same memory “leak” problem. A few days after purchase (and thus several days of SMS, call logs and e-mail messages), all SMS messages, call logs and a few e-mails disappeared. I then started searching the web for similar problems and it appears that this has been a common issue with the Pearl (and apparently now with the Curve, too). It would have happened again today if I did not remove the battery to free up the memory! Yesterday evening, the free memory was at more 20 MB. This afternoon, it dropped to 13.8MB. No change after I did turn/off the device. After I removed the battery, the free memory was back to more than 21 MB. There are several problems: Firstly, as soon as the free memory drops below 12 MB (the reserved space for “media” files), the Curve starts deleting SMS and e-mail messages WITHOUT any warning. Secondly, I have to remove the battery AT LEAST on a DAILY basis to avoid the loss of my messages. My operating system is up to date: v4.2.2.89 (Platform 2.4.0.39).I use BlackBerry BIS and I am not connected to any BlackBerry BES.

It is truly ironic that the reason I switched to Blackberry was due to its messaging capabilities; yet, that’s the feature causing major headaches. Over the last 10 years, I have NEVER lost any messages on my Palms nor Windows Mobile machines. I switch to Blackberry and I lost messages within days!

I am using BlackBerry now for over two years and it was the first time I had to experience this bad thing happen. I had a 7290 and a 8700 and it seems like this is just a Curve (and Pearl) problem because my colleagues are using the 8800 and they never had this problem.

If somebody told me this story I would not have believed him - I hope there is a bug report at RIM and they are working on it. My device already is down again at 11MB free and I deleted everything I do not need.

My OS is version 4.2.2.90 (Plaform 2.4.0.35).

I hope the Update I made yesterday will fix this problem - see http://dertompson.com/index.php/2007/08/27/blackberry-curve-update/

Does anyone else have the problem that not only ‘old’ SMS and call logs are deleted, but also for a few days after new messages only appear in the inbox for a split second?!? and are deleted with no chance to read?? Can you let me know if there is any way to stop this!

  8. Sean Says:

I want to know too. I had this problem right after I got my blackberry device (over a year ago), and it just happened again today. If anyone has any idea as to how to prevent this, it would be greatly appreciated.

  9. tompson Says:

@Darren and Sean: what OS version do you use? how many memory is free on your device?

check under general message options how are your sms stored? theme controlled or in separate folders?

    hey folks

i am having the this prob too, but with a twist at my berry media card is reading 1.9G total, 1.7G available. while the memory available certainly would be greater after all this disappears it certainly would not amount to 1.7G ….my berry is less than 6 months old, has not been abused beyond normal day to day wear and tear and randomly i lose call logs, Bberry messenger convos, emails, texts, everything….tho have never had the instantly disappear problem….

  11. tompson Says:

@mark: this has nothing to do with the media card. only the internal memory of the device counts. the Curve has 64MB internal memory of which are about 20MB free

  12. Donna Says:

I have been having the same problem - my phone log hasn’t disappeared but email do - no rhyme or reason which or when - just a random wash of email. I have over 37MB of memory so that can’t be the problem. I have 2 email accounts on the device and it only seems to happen with my Outlook account. It is only 2 months old so everything loaded is new. Thoughts?

  13. SJS Says:

Hey Donna, my messages were being deleted by the phone every 1- 1,5 months… After having read the postings above I have bought 1 gig memory card… The problem disappeared, I had to delete my messages myself when the hhistory exceeded 7 m period and curve started to perform slower… so, its all memory issue (at least from my standpoint)pls try to do hard reset more often, and free up more space, cheers

  14. Donna Says:

    Thanks - I have a 2 gig memory card in. I will try a hard reset. D

i just got my pearl a month ago and today i woke up to a very unfortunate situation. my call log was deleted and all my text messages were gone! and even worse i could see that i was receiving messages but they would be deleted INSTANTLY. i tried sending a message from my mom’s phone to mine and again it popped up and deleted itself. i called the verizon support center and all they could do for me was offer to send me a new phone.. which for them may seem like a nice deal but for me is horrible. all my settings and everything i have set up in the past month will be gone and even worse i leave for college in a few days! not something i want to deal with at the moment.

  17. tompson Says:

@Meg that seems like the same problem @Darren mentioned above. Maybe he can help you …
