This week I found a great tool for encrypting files - TrueCrypt. TrueCrypt is OpenSource and allows you to encrypt a whole partition or just files with AES-256, Serpent, or Twofish. These algorithms are very strong so without the selected password it is not possible to get to your data - do not forget your password
TrueCrypt works under Windows and Linux. It is also perfect for storing files on USB memory sticks. Encrypted files are mounted like partitions and the access speed is really fast.
I also downloaded the free Virtual Appliance for Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn from jars.de. With the free VMware Player you I use it for test purposes under Windows.

Well, if you have a Mac and OS X it’s already included. Simply create a mountable DMG with HDD Management Tool, which can be either plain or encrypted with AES 128.
You can predefine a maximum size (perfect for making backups on DVD) or just let it growing. It’s really astonishing, like Steve would say

I think Windows Vista also comes with a feature like that built in but this is a nice extension for older Windows installations or Linux systems.
